The Coach AKA Bat boy!!!!!!!
In 1986 Jim Haines took over a Pepin Softball team that was in need of help. It did not take long to recognize that this program had the coach it needed to take them into the future. In his inaugural season the Lakers finished 4-12. It wouldn't be long and the powerful Elmwood softball program that had dominated softball in the Dunn St. Croix since the start of the sport in Wisconsin began to realize that it was evident they were going have to be at their best when the new and improved Pepin squad showed up. By the time that the early 90's rolled around the softball games between Pepin and Elmwood became the ones that would decide the conference championships, due to the hard work and dedication that the new coach had put into his new brand of Pepin Softball!
In 1993 coach Haines took the first Pepin softball team to state in school history. The regional championship victory over their tough opponents from Elmwood would kick off a rivalry that is still going strong today. The 1-0 loss to the eventual state champions, Pecitonica would prove that this program was for real. 1993 produced the confidence that we belong in the elite company in softball in the state. 1995 would prove that we belong and with a state title under our belt, pave the way for all the future Lady Lakers.
Retiring after the 2005 softball season, coach Haines eclipsed the 300 career wins mark. Many of the coaches that are listed ahead of him started up to ten years before him. Coach Haines did it from 1986-2005, an incredible accomplishment. In his 20 years as head coach of the Lakers he brought home 12 conference championships, 8 regional championships, 5 sectional championships, finished runner up twice, and won the state title in 1995 and 1998. He also turned 17 great young ladies into all state players!
The driving force behind the success that Pepin softball has enjoyed. Arcadia native Jim Haines brought the work ethic and dedication that made him a world class wrestler to Pepin and turned the softball program into a statewide perennial powerhouse!!
Head coach Jim Haines Wife Bea Haines, who is responsible for so much of the behind the scenes work. She managed the coach and took care of so many things over the years, from the taping of the games to organizing the food stands, and a million things in between. We will be forever grateful for her contributions!!! Daughters, Jessy an all state player for the Laker's and 2002 graduate. And Rachel also an all state player (2 time) for the Laker's and a 2005 graduate.
